A BEAUTIFUL CANADIAN COPPER HALF PENNY TOKEN OF LOWER CANADA MINTED 1812 AD .
These tokens were struck and used in England Until 1817 when they were ordered to be removed, they were then shipped to Canada.
In both Lower and Upper Canada in the early 19th century, there was little in the way of circulating coinage, and merchants struggled to use what coinage there was available that came in a variety of denominations from numerous countries, including, England, the United States and Mexico. To remedy this situation, banks, businesses and individuals began to mint their own tokens/coins.
THE SIZE IS 27.3 MM AND 6.32 GRAMS.
    Breton 960
OBVERSE – Laureate and draped bust of George III right, all within a wreath of oak.
REVERSE – Commerce seated left on a bale; in her right hand, scales; in the left, a cornucopia; in the distance a ship. HALF PENNY TOKEN 1812
Colonial Canada had a severe cash shortage for most of the 1800s. Neither France nor England, the area’s controlling governments, did anything to ease the problem. Barter wasn’t practical for small purchases; people needed coppers. Half penny and penny tokens came to the rescue.
The Bank of Upper Canada was established in 1821 in York (Toronto, Ontario) under a charter granted by the Province of Upper Canada in 1819. When Upper and Lower Canada were united in 1841 to form the Province of Canada, it was decided that only the bank that held the government accounts should have the right to issue copper tokens. This privilege was enjoyed by the Bank of Montreal until 1848.
Following the passage of the Rebellion Losses Bill in 1849, rioting in Montreal led to the destruction of the legislative buildings and the capital of the province was transferred to Toronto. As a result, the right to issue tokens passed to the Bank of Upper Canada.
