    Description

Here is the Baptismal booklet of Samuel Matthew Clay, born May 2, 1880, son of Samuel and Sallie (Matthew) Clay.  The baptism took place on July 17, 1880, the pastor was A. J. Bachman and the sponsors were the mother and Mrs. Samuel Mathew a born Batdorf.  There are 12 pages in the booklet, several with Bible verses and one for a photo of the baby that is empty and the center page is for the baptism information.  It doesn't list the name of the church where the baptism took place, but I did some research and found that Samuel Clay was baptized in St. Paul's Reformed Church in Schaefferstown, PA.   Mrs. Samuel Matthew, (1819 - 1896) the sponsor was his maternal grandmother, Catherine (Batdorf) Matthew.  Samuel M. Clay's parents were Samuel (1840 - 1913), he was a veteran of the Civil War.  Samuel's mother was Sarah (Sallie) Matthew (1843 - 1909), they lived in Lebanon County, PA. and were the parents of Henry, Charles, Samuel & Zacharias.  Samuel Matthew Clay married Mary Engle in January 1902, she was the daughter of Joseph and Harriet Engle, the marriage took place in Newmanstown, Lebanon Co., PA, they had 6 children.  Mary was born in 1884 and died in 1952, Samuel died in 1949, they are buried in Millcreek Memorial Cemetery, Newmanstown, PA.  The booklet has rough edges on the cover and pages and some corners missing.  The cover has some marks on it and is torn in the back fold.  The back fold is worn, the string that ties it all together has come loose from the top holes of the pages.  Not sure it's the original string or not.  Great for anyone researching the history of the Clay family.  Postage will be 5.00 to the U.
