    Description

From a local estate, this beautiful Chinese Summer Surcoat is most likely from the Han Quin Dynasty Period 1849-1899.  The body of this unlined coat is of summer Chinese silk gauze, with 18 full 8 1/2" circular medallions.  Each medallion shows two dragons and other embellishments (see photo).  Surcoats featuring dragons were usually worn by the Imperial Family or other designated individuals.  The body and sleeves of this coat are embellished by hidden stitch with creamy silk satin panels embroidered with very fine mountain scenes of ladies, florals, stairways, and pagodas.  There is one set of matching ties in the front.  See pictures for the intricate designs.
Some expected wear is evident on the sleeves. Cuffs have age damage as shown in the pictures.
