I have bought out the supply of Steingrau or stone gray wool fabric from Great War Militaria....this is the original wool they used for the Imperial German uniform pants.....
This is the correct color and weight for Pioneer uniform pants..you can see the difference in color from the last photo, which is shown over a current pair of commercial reenactor pants..depending on your size and weight..the amout needed would be between 2 1/4  and 3 1/4  yards.
